Working at Google or Microsoft?
Posted in Google, Microsoft | By AhTim @ July 3rd, 2008
Either working at Google or Microsoft is dream work for many engineer and developer. We all know Mr Bill Gates has “slowly” retire from Microsoft after 30 years of hard work on last week, which founded by him at year 1975. In year 1998, Larry Page and Sergey Brin has found Google Inc. Both companies are giant leader in their market. But which one better?
Google or Microsoft?
What is your answer for this question? I know it is a subjective question, but actually both companies did provide very good benefits compare to many. So far, there are few senior developers tell the world that Microsoft is better. Is it true?
There is a long long full page story. To keep it short, I’ve summarized 3 main reason why they jump from Google to Microsoft.
- Poor products direction
The web applications develop by the big G have no real value. Just help people waste time online (blogger.com, youtube, etc)
- Culture
Very hard to change the “coolness” culture.
- Interview process
The big M have really good interview process where the big G only concentrate on technical thinking. Nothing about technology nor engineering. Is it true? Don’t the big G more emphasize on “Creative” than others?
Based on these reasons, there is no salary, benefits and working environment involve. That means the reasons above are more to their own personal feelings. Sometime, the department and superior might affect our “feelings” to the company but it doesn’t mean the company is like that.
My two cents
Recently there are many colleagues resign. Maybe they continue to look for better courier, maybe not. My experience told me that NO ONE company could fulfill to satisfy their employee 100%. Do you agree?
Both companies are far ahead many others in the world. Which you prefer if let you choose?

I’ll choose Google as well. Like what bohemien said “I see blogging and webhosting becoming the premier global business in the near future and Google will be a very monopolistic participant in the near future”.
By the way, I have submitted my resign letter and will be working in a new environment by the end of this month.
