Today a user phone me that his computer couldn’t boot into Windows. From his description I thought it is hard drive problem?
Reach user side, switch on computer to verify the problem again. The actual error was
Windows could not start because the below file is missing or corrupt: C:\Winnt\System32\Ntoskrnl.exe
Restore Missing / Corrupted Files
A file corrupt is better than hard disk corrupted. Restore back the corrupted files with few steps below:
- Insert the Microsoft Windows XP CD.
- Reboot the computer, as the computer is starting you should see a message to press any key to boot from the CD. When you see this message press any key.
- In the Microsoft Windows XP setup menu press the R key to enter the recovery console.
- Select the operating system you wish to fix (normally is number 1), and then enter the administrator password.
- Type “expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32“
- You will then be prompted if you wish to overwrite the file type Y and press enter to overwrite the file.
- Some computer need restore PCI system file “expand d:\i386\pci.sy_ c:\windows\system32\drivers“
- Type exit to reboot the computer.
That’s it. The computer come backs alive without any hardware replacement or hard disk repair. Took me just 5 minutes to troubleshoot and repair the computer. Fast huh?
