Upgrade to WordPress 2.8 Or Not?

WordPress 2.8 is out since last week. But I am still using WordPress 2.6.

Many of you asking should I upgrade my blog engine to WordPress 2.8? My answer is Do Not Simply upgrade without planning. New version is always new features, mean new risks!

WordPress 2.8 Highlights

Some expected highlight features in the latest WordPress version. Mainly on admin interface section.

  • New drag-and-drop widgets admin interface
  • Plugin and Theme Editor with Syntax highlighting and function lookup
  • Four columns dashboard widgets
  • Faster admin pages loading

More highlights and new features here.

Check Plugin First!

Many complaint their blog down after upgrade. Most of the problem related to auto update, incompatible plugins and theme. So, check your plugins compatibility first, before upgrade to WordPress 2.8.

You may check the WordPress plugin compatibility list via BraveNewCode and official WordPress website. Thanks for those guys who keep the list up-to-date. It is now 5000+ plugins in the list.

Only upgrade to the latest WordPress 2.8 if all your plugins are compatible. Or you have to give up the incompatible plugins.

My Two Cents

I have few blogs using WordPress 2.7.1, the admin page loading extremely slow. Might consider upgrade to 2.8 to make it run faster.

As for this AhTim Tech Blog, I can’t afford long down time. Also, I don’t see any need to upgrade it till the next major release. What do you think?

Well, I still have some sites running on WP 2.6 but I am slowly upgrading them to WP 2.8. There are many new features in WP 2.7+ which you will miss out if you still stick to WP 2.6, such as threaded comments and in-built avatars support. Also, 2.8 seems faster and more stable than 2.6 as the code base has been optimised.

I was planing to update to Wordpress 2.8, but recently few of my clients reported lots of problems like
    Internal server Error
Broken Permalinks and broken theme issue..
    So for now
I will wait for some more reviews and issues before I will upgrade my blog to wordpress 2.8
