Upgrade and Hack iPod Touch 2.1 firmware

It was more than 8 months since my last hack to iPod touch 1.1.3 firmware. I know iPod touch 2.0 is already available but I don’t upgrade immediately. There were still lots of software compatibility problem that time. For example, my lovely MxTube app that allow me to download Youtube video directly into iPod touch doesn’t work.

Why Upgrade and Hack iPod 2.1 ?

Until the release of iPhone/iPod touch SDK for developer and launching of App Store, thousands of free and paid apps available for download. After then, I keep an eye for the jailbreak version and techniques.

Frankly, iPod touch 1.1.3 was running very well in terms of performance and stability. Only I don’t like its limitation of new apps. Most of new apps are available in App Store now. To use App Store, you must upgrade to at least iPod 2.0 firmware. Finally, I decided to upgrade and hack my iPod touch to the latest 2.1 firmware!

Look at my iPod touch 2.1 firmware screenshot on right, is it attractive? Yes! The new Gee Theme Pro make my iPod looks more professional. Again, Big thanks to Rupert. The iPod touch 2.1 make screenshot easiest ever. No third party app was needed. While press and hold “Home” button, press and release “Power” button to take a snapshot. It auto insert into Photo library.

How to Upgrade and Hack iPod 2.1 ?

Don’t waste your money pay for jailbreaker. The hacking technique just took me 20 minutes or so to complete my hacking process. Opps, no more jailbreak in this version. It is call QuickPWN now.

Just few simple and easiest steps ever. Of course, copy out data from your current iPod such as contacts, notes, wallpapers. Perhaps sync with your computer to keep all data before upgrade and hack iPod 2.1 firmware. Download these files before continue.

  1. Download latest iTunes (ver 8.0 now ~64MB) – iTunes version 7.7 and above should work too. Version lower than that does not support iTunes Store. iTunes store contain lots of Free apps for your iPod!
  2. Download iPod 2.1 firmware (~245MB) from this torrent (iPod 2.1 5F137 Restore ipsw)
  3. Download QuickPWN GUI (~15MB) to hack iPod 2.1 step by step in easiest way!

After you download 3 files above, install latest iTunes before continue. Once done, connect iPod to computer via USB. Now the hacking techniques come.

  1. In iTunes, browse to iPod devices, Shift Right-click on “Restore” button.
  2. Select the iPod 2.1 firmware.ipsw you have downloaded.
  3. Be patient and wait for iPod 2.1 firmware restore. It will wipe out all your data and put in firmware 2.1. It took me less than 10 minutes. In this process, your iPod touch will auto restart few times.
  4. Once done, a clean iPod screen will shown on your newly format iPod.
  5. Extract or unzip QuickPWN GUI that you have downloaded.
  6. No installation needed. Double click to run QuickPWN.exe in the folder.
  7. Select iPod touch and follow on screen instruction.
  8. A tricky part is to turn your iPod into DFU / Rocovery mode. The on screen instruction with count down timer is quite fast.
  9. Don’t worry. Just retry few times to enter DFU mode. It won’t hurt your iPod. Basically it is just press and hold “Home”, then press and hold “Power”, then release “Power”. At last release “Home”. I retry 2-3 times to get this working. The timing is important.

As I mentioned, the whole restore and hacking process just took me 20 minutes! Without QuickPwn GUI, I don’t think we can’t hack so fast. Thanks to the QuickPwn development team. They have made our iPod cooler ever.

By the way, I’ve installed full 3 pages of apps. Am I too greedy to grab all useful tools? Have you upgrade and hack your iPod to 2.1 firmware? ;)
