The Green Data Center

Still remember the solar powered green web hosting? Many giant technology companies start to build their so called Green Data Center. With these green data center, they expect to save energy as well as reduce polution to the earth.

Who are they? How they manage to save energy and reduce polution? If you are the green architect designer, what idea you have?

The Green Data Centers

  1. The computer software giant, Microsoft has building its green data center last year. Microsoft plans to use recycled water as its cooling systems in San Antonio data center. The data center consist 500,000 square feet and contain tens of thousands of servers. At Quincy data center, electricity was generated by hydroelectric plants. In addition, Microsoft also interested in electricity generated by wind near Texas.
  2. The Internet giant, Google has patented its Water Based Data Center. Google may build it on a ship. The wave energy converter can produce power from sea water while at the same time using water as a method for cooling. 2 in 1 power source saving, clever huh?
  3. Sun System going to create an underground data center that will use up to 50% less power than a ground-level data center. How they reduce power? The coolant will be ground water and the site’s temperature is a constant 15 degrees Celsius. Hence no air-conditioner will be needed.

So now, we will have data centers on ground, on sea, and underground. Which one you prefer? Do you willing for pay more to host your server in green data center?

My two cents

Google idea to build water based data center is awesome. It is the most dangerous location on sea. What if the ship sink? Does the data center water proof? It is open for terrorist attack too! I think they should already think ahead of my worries. :)

I will definitely choose Sun’s underground data center between these 3. The most secure and really green method. At least it won’t affect the air above the ground. What do you think? ;)
