Install a good automatic defragmenter that defrags intelligently in the background when the system has idle resources. You won't have to worry about the time it takes to defrag your drives unlike with manual or scheduled defragging. Zero work on your part yet the drives will be defragged automatically.

@Edrei: Thanks for your tips. But have you tried to compare with Auslogics?

@chalgi: Is Diskeeper a freeware?

@Tiffany: If you restore back to original state, I don't think defrag is needed. Wait until you have more files then try run the software.

I just wanted to say thanks for the info. I was running into problems with my computer; I thought I was catching a virus. So I called my OEM and they helped me do a system restore on it (I think that's what it's called). The problem with that is I lost all the stuff I had saved. So I jumped on the internet and started reading the posts of fellow bloggers who are more computer literate than I. One blogger told me I needed to purchase Antivirus software. The only one I had ever heard about was Norton, so that's what I bought. Another blogger told me that just to be safe I should buy a USB flash drive to save my important files on. They suggested a website called http://www.memorysuppliers.com, so I went there and bought a flash drive. Then a friend also suggested that I needed to do a system defrag. I just wasn't sure how to do it. So again, I started doing research and that's how I ended up on you blog. As soon as I’m done writing this I plan on download that Auslogics Disc Defrag. So thank you!! I think you've just answered my question. I will write back later and let you know how it worked for me.

I installed Diskeeper to automatically defrag in realtime. The features are splendid and it runs without using up system resources excessively.

15-20 minutes for a 30 gig partition. I defrag every month of so or less depending on how often I use my PC. The reason being, the more you defrag, the less it takes for you to defrag the next round. Also, less files in your HDD means less time to defrag as well.

I do use Disktrix though to defrag. It improves my performance about 10-15% though it does claim to improve speeds up to 20%, but some of the settings in there I don't need and I do have an old hard disk to begin with.
