The Fastest OS - Splashtop
Posted in Linux, Software | By AhTim
We are all hate about restarting computer. Because sometime it took long boot up time if it was installed with softwares.
Do you still remember in Pentium I processors time, some Pentium 75Mhz CPU took minutes to boot up just a Windows 95 machine! Huh~ sweat. Even have enough time to make a cup of coffee or tea.
Come to Vista age, this boot up period still a big problem. That’s the reason why many people do not switch off their computer.
Splash, The Fastest OS
ASUS has come out its new concept of Operating System (OS). This so call “Instant On Motherboard” contain Splashtop OS in its firmware.
According to Splashtop blog, it is a Linux OS that able to boot up for instant access to the Internet, Skype, media player in 5 seconds! Wow, this is too fast. Work similar like my iPod touch or other PDA.
Why it can boot so fast? Its because instead of waiting for a full boot from HDD, Splashtop boot from firmware. You can surf Net, Chat, surf, and play a game - all one click away after pushing the power button!
More than the speed, Splashtop provide a secure Web-surfing environment. Since it is firmware and not Windows, virus or spyware is not able to attack inside.
According to the Splashtop video, you can continue boot to the normal OS at the Express Gate screen.
My two cetns
Now Splashtop user can save time and money because it consume much less energy compare to normal computer. The lacking is it only available for certain ASUS motherboard. I would prefer they come out some usb stick or PCMIA card that compatible with different motherboard.
I hope to get a Splashtop enable laptop in future. How about you? ![]()

@Greentac: As shown in the movie clip. The interface is similar to Windows application.
@joshuaun: You have to buy the ASUS Splashtop enabled motherboard to run it.

@AhTim: I see. Looks good. But, I don’t have a ASUS motherboard. Perhaps, I have to wait for the other version which can be used by any motherboard.

This sounds superb. I wonder how much does such motherboard cost? The idea of having a bootable OS in the firmware is great.

I believe it has very limited functions that’s why can reside on the firmware.

@Kitkat: Yes, only basic Internet and Entertainment feature that we use normally. But you can boot to your own OS if it does not fit your purpose.
