Upgrade To WordPress 2.8.5 Hardening Release

As you know WordPress 2.9 is on the way out end of this month. But I can’t wait anymore to upgrade WordPress to version 2.8.5. Not the version has great features, but to resolve some blog’s errors.

Let’s see what is new in WordPress 2.8.5 before go to fix my blog’s errors. Headline changes in the release are:

  • Fix for the Trackback Denial-Of-Service (DOS) attack
  • Fine tune PHP code variables
  • File upload functionality to be whitelisted for all users
  • Retiring of the two importers of Tag data

No big surprise. Just better security fixes. Then why I take the upgrade?

There are few errors in my blog recently, could be more than a month i think:

  • Once publish new post, it turn to blank instead of admin page.
  • Can’t build XML sitemap for search engines.

Upgrade to WordPress 2.8 Or Not?

WordPress 2.8 is out since last week. But I am still using WordPress 2.6.

Many of you asking should I upgrade my blog engine to WordPress 2.8? My answer is Do Not Simply upgrade without planning. New version is always new features, mean new risks!

WordPress 2.6 has been released for quite a while. Many has upgraded their blogs to the latest WordPress 2.6 without any problem. So, I decided to upgrade my WordPress 2.5 to WordPress 2.6 too.

I hate to reinstall and setup back whole things. So, I’ve come out a manual way to upgrade WordPress in minutes. 3 easiest steps upgrade to WordPress 2.6:

1. Download Wordpress 2.6 (~1.2MB)

2. Unzip it, Upload and Replace your WordPress hosting, except: wp-config.php file and wp-content folder.

3. Point your browser to “http://yourdomain/wp-admin/upgrade.php“. Follow the instructions on screen to continue and upgrade within seconds.

Wordpress 2.5After I found the feed error since 3 days ago, I have decided to upgrade my wordpress to the latest version Wordpress 2.5. Although I hate to upgrade (the most tedious job), but I have no choice to do so. I suspect my blog has been infected by some spyware. I even cannot enter to the main page when I try to access today’s afternoon.

The only way I think the virus can infect my blog is via ftp client. I always like to let my ftp client open. I suspect the spyware might upload itself or perhaps change some coding in my php? I know IE still able to browse my blog but Firefox banned to enter.
