Speed up disk cleanup tool
Posted in How To, Tips & Tricks | By AhTim @ January 25th, 2008
Frankly speaking, I have downloaded too many softwares to test, but seldom
do disk cleanup. This is no good
Since I am a windows user, I have a free disk cleanup tool under
accessories to use. Its time for me to cleanup my computer!
The problem is it took too long time just for it to start and analyzes
the amount of space that can be freed by compressing old files first (see the screenshot below). Sometime it took 5 minutes or more.

How to speed up disk cleanup tool?
The time-consuming analysis can be remove by tweaking windows
registry. But please pay more attention when tweaking registry, delete
wrong key can cause your Windows OS not function properly!

Click at Start, Run then type in regedit and press OK. Browse to the
“HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software
\VolumeCaches” key. Select the sub-key “compress old files” and backup
to a .reg file through “File | Export”. Keep the reg file for restore purpose if needed in future.
Now, delete the entire “compress old files” entry. Restart your computer and launch your disk cleanup tool directly without waiting
for analysis process.
After tweak my disk cleanup tool, the tool start immediately without waiting. Probably I will cleanup my harddisk more often.

I used these tips as well, but ended up having to purchase a registry cleaner to ultimately resolve my problems. I ended up buying one called RegCure from http://www.pc-registry-repair.com
Shortly after I bought this, I found out you can get one called CCleaner for free! DOH! You live, you learn…

I whole heartedly agree with your assessment and warning that a lot of caution must be exercised when tweaking registry (“delete wrong key can cause your Windows OS not function properly!”).
That is why we created a tool that does it safely and painlessly for those who cannot afford such “oops…”
Initially, we created this tool for our own internal use, but then realized: If it’s good for us, it is probably good for others as well.
It is named the “Disk Cleanup Accelerator” and you can find it here:
