Migrate from BlogSpot to WordPress [How to]
Posted in Web Hosting, WordPress | By AhTim @ September 29th, 2008
Anyone migrate their blog from BlogSpot to WordPress? I would say it is a terrible experience. My sister has a Chinese life blog. She asked for help and I promised to migrate for her.
The orignal blog is on free BlogSpot. As I suggested, better go for own domain name and web hosting if you are serious blogger. She did and need to migrate all post and comment to new housing.
Migrate BlogSpot to WordPress
I tried to use the Import Blogger function in WordPress manage but failed. It prompt connection error due when accessing to Google HTTPS secure session. Lots of people face the same problem when migrate from BlogSpot (or Blogger.com) to WordPress. I’m using WordPress 2.6.1, not sure other version.
After some research, found a workaround to migrate BlogSpot’s blog.
- Register a free blog at wordpress.com
- Import BlogSpot (Blogger.com) posts and comments using Import Blogger feature.
- Export Blog posts and comments from wordpress.com (as .xml in WXR format)
- In your own WordPress web host, import “WordPress” in WXR format (the exported .xml file)
- Done!
Theorically, it should work perfectly. After ask for author name mapping, all 167 posts migrated successfully. Anyhow, in my case it stop after import 7 comments. I retry a few times but failed too. Categories are migrated correctly too, but not Tags.
My two cents
I consider this is about 70% success migration with comments loss. Anyway, my sister still quite satisfied with the result as long as her posts are there. Hope she pick up and use to WordPress soon. Welcome to the WordPress blogging world!
For me, it’s really a nightmare to migrate out from BlogSpot. Slow, tedious, imcomplete! Don’t ever use BlogSpot if you are serious blogger. Register a domain name with me and subscribe to Free web hosting if you are just hobby blogger.
