Microsoft Windows 7 Features Preview
Posted in Reviews, Software | By AhTim @ October 30th, 2008
Although many say Microsoft Windows operating system is poor, it still the biggest player in Worldwide market. For example myself prefer MAC OS X Leopard, but it didn’t come as cheap as Windows price and also some hardware compatibility problem. At the end, I stick with Windows.
Actually not only me. Are you one of the Windows user here? I pick up the statistics from Google Analytics and found 71% Windows XP user, 27% Windows Vista user, and only 7% Macintosh user. From the results, we know most of the Windows user stick at Windows XP since it release on year 2002. Why? Are they waiting for better OS? Or they computer specs unable to support resources hungry Vista?
Windows 7 Features Preview
If you face the same question above, Windows 7 is the Answer! Let’s see the features to find out why Windows 7 is the answer?
- New taskbar with app controls
- No sidebar anymore. Gadgets appear on desktop.
- Faster window resizing method
- Simplify system tray icons
- Better user account control, up to app level
- Add in multitouch feature, for eg: HP TouchSmart PC
- Improved memory management, apparently run fine on 1Ghz netbook with 1GB RAM
- Improved multiple monitor management. Remote desktop work with multiple monitors as well.
- Extra: support up to 256 CPUs (but who use it?)
The highlights of the features are mainly on: taskbar app controls, multitouch feature, multiple monitor management, and better memory management.
Preview of Windows 7 interface. Similar to Vista, with enhanced features.

My two cents
Bad memory management is one of the biggest problem in Windows since its first edition. I hope this Windows 7th edition really improve on Memory management, with 20 years of operating system experience.
During PDC keynote, Microsoft representative demo his Windows 7 run fine on small netbook and said that it still had about half its memory free after boot. I doubt on that?! No one know after it release to user.
Wait for the big Windows release early next year 2009. Hope it give us some surprise, not disappointment.

So fast meh? Vista still barely stable now they wanna came out with a new OS….
It took 6 years after XP to launch Vista, and now they’re launching Windows 7 just 2 years after Vista? Surely, seems like they’re cannibalizing their self.

@CLF: That’s the whole point.
Vista was a total failure, of course Microsoft won’t ever admit that, but the general consensus shows it with its horrible sales figures and such sites as savexp.com. XP also had quite a bit of trouble launching, but the big difference was that it was based of a stable kernel (Windows 2000, one of MS’s best OS’s IMO, which was based off of NT).
And although the kernel for XP is still quite stable, basing another OS off the very aged kernel is just adding bloat…such that Vista is. No matter what updates/patches/service packs that Microsoft releases for Vista…the performance increases will only be marginal at best, although they have done quite a good job getting it more stable since its release.
Microsoft, in my opinion, has been doing a great job reforming the company…they offer good FREE products now…can you believe it? Amazing huh? And they’ve also started listening more to their customers and their wants. Which is probably a definite reason why they stripped down the kernel (now MinWin) and rewrote most of it for Windows 7.

Not good either; it’s just a slightly slimmed down Vista clone. And if we look at Microsoft’s history, 2 years can stretch a very long time.
I use various Linux distributions; they’re free (as in liberty, and most as in beer), fast, secure, and do everything Windoze can’t. Check out Ubuntu if you want to get your feet wet: http://www.ubuntu.com (though I personally prefer Gentoo)
@Dexter
Google’s been offering great, free products for quite some time; MS is just imitating. Again look at their history, a good number of their ‘products’ are just copies or downright theft of competition’s.

Hello all,
It isnt a slightly ’slimmed down vista’ as Jach said, they redid the entire freakin thing nearly.
I’ve used ubuntu many times i installed it and used it for a few months but you cant beat windows, vista was bad but every company does bad things occasionally.
I think windows 7 will be good, in fact i’d bet my left testicle on it.
