How To Play AVI, WMV with QuickTime on Mac?

It is painful when my Macbook can’t play AVI, WMV movie files. In fact, there are more files format cannot be play by QuickTime (Mac) by default. FLV, MKV, DivX and Xvid to name a few.

Why QuickTime can’t play? It only plays AVI files that both audio and video were compressed using a codec that QuickTime can use. You may find video with NO sound even you can play them. That’s really annoying experience.

Fortunately I’m able to resolve the problem and enjoy downloaded movies. Share 3 solutions with you. Hope it helps!

Solution 1. Flip4Mac

Flip4Mac is an official Windows Media Components designed for QuickTime. You can play Windows Media files (.wma and .wmv) directly in QuickTime Player and view Windows Media content on the Internet using a Web browser.

Solution 2. Perian

Perian is a free, open source, QuickTime component that add native supports for many popular media types. With Perian, you should be able to play everything from DivX to FLV including AVI, and XviD.

It required Mac OS X 10.4.7 or higher to run. Download Perian 1.1.4 here.

Solution 3. VLC Media Player

In case both method above can’t play your encoded videos, VLC Media player is right for you. It is an universal media player supporting most audio and video formats (H.264, Ogg, DivX, MKV, TS, MPEG-2, mp3, MPEG-4, aac).

The good about VLC player is it doesn’t need additional codecs. And it is FREE and open source. Download VLC Media Player here.
