Good news for Gmail users!
Google has added a new feature called IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) into its Gmail utility. Further more this feature is FREE while other web based email provider still charging on this extra feature such as Yahoo! Mail.
Why use Gmail IMAP ?
The main benefit to use this IMAP connectivity is it allow you to access e-mail from multiple devices while keeping that information simultaneously synced on Gmail server, no matter which device or desktop you used to access it. What does it means? This mean you can access your Gmail by using your desktop email client or mobile phone email client and synchronize your emails with Gmail server.
With this new feature, you can access to Gmail with desktop experience plus benefit of mobility! Sounds great right?
How to utilize Gmail IMAP?
It’s quite easy to configure your Gmail IMAP in 5 minutes.
1. Enable IMAP connection – In Gmail “settings” -> “Forwarding and POP/IMAP” -> Under IMAP Access, select “Enable IMAP” then “Save Changes”

2. Set up in email client – It’s all depend on which email client you use. You may check the configuration instruction from Google here. But as my suggestion, I ‘ll use Mozilla Thunderbird as my first choice email client because it is Free. (Yes, I like Free things!)
Use the info below to set your email client:
* Incoming Server: imap.gmail.com
* Incoming Port: 993
* Select ‘Use secure Socket Layer (SSL)’
* Outgoing Server: smtp.gmail.com
* Outgoing Port: 587
* Authentication: email@gmail.com + email password
If you are using Mozilla Thunderbird as your email client, refer to my screen shot below on how to setup your Gmail IMAP.
Put in the incoming server settings in Tools -> Account Settings -> Server Settings

Put in outgoing server settings in SMTP server settings

My two cents
I like Gmail and I like desktop email client (easier to use), and within 5 minutes I resolved my everyday hassle to check mail in web browser
Have you tried to utilize Gmail IMAP feature?
