There are few software house such as Camtasia is promoting their video recording software free but with older version. While trying this video recording software, I’ve found another better solution, at least for me. It do not need download, no installation, no setup, no configuration, no settings and no hassle!

How to use Screencast-o-Matic ?

Although no installation required, you need at least Java 1.5 with recommended web browser - Firefox 2. If you still have not install the latest Firefox version, you could download and install at

After that, just go to Screencast-o-Matic website, click on the “Create” button. Wait for the software loading, then select your desire video settings including capture size, microphone and mouse movement. I would suggest you to choose the smallest video size 640×480 to save your upload time and diskspace (if you want to export your video record to your harddisk).

Click on “Go” and the transparent video recording frame will pop up (running in Java), move the recording frame to the location you want to record, then click record to start. After your recording, click close to finish. You may upload your video record to screencast free video hosting or export to harddisk at your own choice. You are done, send your video link and share with your friends!

My two cents

Initially I thought want to evaluate another free video recording named Jing project. But I was so impress with this web based video recorder and decided to write about it then share with you. With screencast-o-matic, it is more than enough to create a simple but useful tutorial video. Furthermore, we do not need to care about the video hosting diskspace because it’s all Free!
