DSLR Camera Remote for iPod touch

A very cool App for DSLR photographer with iPhone or iPod touch. Do you believe can control your DSLR (Nikon and Canon) right on iPhone or iPod itself?

Yes, DSLR Camera Remote App enables you to use Apple iPhone or iPod touch to wirelessly adjust cameras settings, fire the shutter, review images, even get a liveview.

Setup DSLR Camera Remote

The setup is quite easy. Here is what you need:

  • Canon EOS DSLR or Nikon DSLR camera
  • Apple iPhone or iPod Touch
  • A WiFi enabled computer (no active internet connection required)
  • DSLR Camera Remote Server software (download ~65mb)
  • DSLR Camera Remote Professional OR DSLR Camera Remote Lite software for iPhone/iPod Touch. Available at iTunes Store for $19.99 (Pro) and $1.99 (Lite).

In my case, I use Nikon D60 to try out the app. Connect DSLR to laptop via USB cable. Must install DSLR camera remote server on computer to enable the remote control.

I can say it is zero configuration, once DSLR Camera Remote app connected to the wifi LAN it automatically look for the server and enable your DSLR remote control.

The photos will then store in your computer harddisk. So no worry on diskspace. You can preview photos taken on iPod touch too.

My Two Cents

It is useful when you’re taking portrait from unreachable angle, for example: at height of ceiling, from the ground. Or very rare case, Self Portrait. For normal shooting, you might seldom use it.

Only DSLR with liveview can have liveview in iPod touch. My Nikon D60 don’t have :( Anyway, I still believe in my eye during shooting. It is faster and more accurate.

The weakness is you have to connect to a computer. It is quite tedious to setup. Unless your DSLR has a wifi and workable with this app.
