HP Proliant USB thumb driveWarning: HP Accidentally Sends Server Customers Virus Infected USB Thumb Drive

HP Australia has warned that optional USB thumb drive that bundled with some of its Proliant servers are infected by malware called Fakerecy and SillyFDC. The USB thumb drive are use when installing optional floppy-disc drives. It’s unclear the amount of infected USB sticks were distributed.

The Register claimed, the malwares likely got onto Proliant USB disks via an infected machine in a factory rather than as some part of a targeted attack. As a computer hardware leading company, I don’t think this is reasonable sake for the customer.

I do use HP Proliant servers for years, I trust its performance and service. But this incident make me feel sad. Do we need to propose HP how frequent they should update their antivirus pattern? Or do we need to suggest the quality control before shipment?

Very Low Virus Risk

Anyway, according to Symantec, Fakerecy and SillyFDC are both low-risk worms that spread by copying themselves onto removable media, mapped drivers, and may download other malicious applications. Fortunately, they are not high risk virus. Firstly, The malware isn’t potent enough to do anything useful from the point of view of hackers. Secondly, only user that need to install floppy drive on Proliant servers will be expose to the risks. (more…)

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

All internet service need our password to login as authorized person. Sometime we just too lazy to think of strong password and put in simple, easy to hack password.

Can you imagine a full time blogger’s Google Adsense account’s password has been guessed by someone? Or your blog’s account password changed by someone else? So strong password is the factor to secure
your blog, website and money!

5 Rules to Stronger Password

You can set a better and stronger password with 5 simple rules. I believe if you follow the rules below, hacker might take hundred or thousand years to break your password. :)

1. Do not use password related to your personal info

Most of the people like to use password that easy to remember such as their birthday date, house location, name, age, etc. All these personal info can be guess by hacker easily by looking at your profile from Internet service.

2. Do not use enhanced password related to yourself

Some more advance user will “enhanced” their password get from personal info. For example, one may enhance their name from “George” to “G3orge” as their password. Some brute force attack can guess these enhanced password by using the special algorithm. So, do not think this is secured.

3. Do not use password that exist in dictionary

The most common password cracking technique is use the words listed in dictionary. The most silly password is use “password” as their password! :)
